Thailand - Bangkok & ChiangMai

Needed a break badly and finally a good 8 day vacation put together with the help of google, agoda, airasia and nokair. This is my itinerary:

Note that Nov 16 - 18 is Loy Krathong festival in Bangkok and Nov 22 is Yi Peng festival in ChiangMai

Day 1: Arrived and checked in at Mandarin Hotel, Rama IV, an average clean and good hotel with affordable price, in quiet area near Chao Pharaya river within walking distance to Sam Yan MRT. Taxi is also available. Walking distance to Patpong street, many local street food - Try the Spicy rice noodle soup, pad thai & local fruits.

Day 2: Tried the brunch at Raintree cafĂ©, Plaza Athenee, Wireless road, if you are looking for international buffet for breakfast, this is a place to go. Next, MRT to Chatuchak Market, this is weekend market where you can find literally anything at cheap price, you need to bargain though.

Loy Krathong Festival at Wat Saket Golden Mountain. Nov 17, 2013

Day 3: Traditional Thai food for lunch at Mallika, 21/36 Th Rang Nam (subway Victory Monument exit 2). A small restaurant offering tasty original thai food at average price. Stop by a good massage center nearby, RangNam, for thai massage. Next destination is shopping at MBK, Pratunam. Shop for thai mangoes, thai peppermint oil, souvenirs, local fresh fruits.  Dinner at 5th floor, wonderful thai food, Yum saap.

Day 4: Rent a car to go to Damnoen Floating Market, coconut sugar factory, tiger zoo and crocodile farm. A bit pricy but worth the trip.

Day 5: Brunch Pork Noodle Soup at Chinatown. More fresh fruits at Chinatown. Temple hopping - Wat Pho and Grand Palace. Depart for Chiang Mai.

Day 6: Tried San Pareni Hotel, quite an impression. It's like living in a dreamland. Definitely recommended. Loved the brunch there. Walk around Nimmanhaemin shops and cafes. Lunch at Tong Tem Toh, 11 Nimmanhemin Soi 13. Teatime at one of the lovely cafes.

Day 7: Rent a car to Doi Suthep, Bhu Bhin palace, and Doi Phui Hmong village. Continue to Promenada and eat at basement Fresh@Prom - original and cheap. Try Khao Soi and the papaya salad vermicelli. Take the red car to Night bazaar, Anusarn market and swing by to watch cabaret show, full of ladyboys with make up and feathers. The show is fun and hilarious. You need to spend 200 Baht for drinks or entrance (either one).

Day 8: Warorot market & Tom Lamyao for fresh local fruits and flowers. Taxi to Tudongkhasathan for Yee Peng festival.

Day 9: Home

Now with more energy

Time flies and things happened faster than I can blog. :-)

I picked up a few things along the way and put them together into these tips:

1. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Don't be a crybaby - if you fall down from learning to ride a bike, get up and ride again. You will master it one day. Life can be hard sometimes, you just need to fight it.

2. But there is a fine line between killing you and making you stronger
If you exercised pressure on others or if you are used to pushing others, be aware that they might reach their limit, and when they do, there is no turning back. Relationship takes a lifetime to build and maintain, it takes a split second to destroy.

3. Be compatible is very important
This includes being able to tolerate, understand, listen without getting defensive, sort out misunderstanding, control emotion, and forgive. As much as you want to yell and go crazy, remember that nobody deserves to be treated that way.

4. Don't let misunderstanding hurt your relationship
If you are at blame, acknowledge it, lower your ego and apologize, otherwise forgive and forget. When your nail grows, you cut the nail not the finger, When misunderstanding grows, you sort it out, don't cut the relationship

5. Don't blame, laugh on it, after all nobody is perfect
If you cannot laugh on someone's mistake, you are at blame, so don't start by blaming others, of course with exception to nuclear mistakes :-)

6. We receive energy from others - like a moon, not the sun.
Surround yourself with positive people, and share the positive energy.

Sometimes we are so used to living in the world where broken things are tossed out and replaced with new shiny ones, that we forget in order to have something that lasts, broken ones need to  be mended. But again, time to move on.. get up and ride the bike again. :-)

4. Wasuponda - Mata Air Buntu Waterfall - the second largest waterfall I have seen after Niagara

Explore Taipei

At a glance, Taipei gives me an impression of a bigger scale of Medan, very Indo-like, with much more Chinese characters. I find myself easier to adapt in China than Taipei, because they have more English in China. I cannot believe that from food menu to lotions ingredients (I look because I have allergies) to telephone/remote control to shopping receipts are all in Chinese, literally everything is in traditional Chinese. Well, I guess this will take some time.

I will start with just one place as of today, by end of 6 months, I should have a list hopefully:
1. Liao Ning Jie Yue Se / Liao Ning Night Market
Small night market in the neighbourhood

2. Gu Gong / National Palace Museum
Used to be inside the Forbidden city in Beijing, but it was moved to Taipei, it contains the art and pottery remains/artifacts from different dynasty. It's a good size and interesting, has a free guided tour, and a very nice and serene garden filled with huge koi fish and a few pairs of black swan. To get there, take MRT stop at Shilin, take bus R-30 or 255. Be sure to stop by Shi Lin Night Market

3. Shi Lin Yue Shi / Shi Lin Night Market
MRT stop at Jian Tan - traditional snacks: pan fried oyster, stinky tofu (if you are a fan, I'm not), fried chicken/porkloin, fried qual eggs on a stick, fried/grilled squid on a stick.

4. Gong Guan
This area is across from NTU, crowded with shops and eateries. A great place for window shopping and snacking. Good to go on Friday Night.

5. Xi Men Ding
A shopping square with lots of food, some outdoor entertainment (dancing, spraypaint, airbrush, seasonal teenage band). Toilet Restaurant is in the area, with chocolate ice cream served in toilet shaped bowl - innovative but seriously not very appetizing.

6. Dan Sui

I like this place, reminds me a little of promenade in LA and a little of navy pier in Chicago. Ate A Gei (Tofu with vermicelli and meatball + fishball soup), love it. Take the boat across to fisherman wharf (Yu Ren Ma Tou), ate fried cuttlefish (You Yu/Hua Ce), Hot Star Ji Pai, Hao Pen You Liang Mien is a must-try.

7. Taipei 101 & Miramar

Start the day with a breakfast at Er Lou, located at S. Dunhua Rd, Sec 2, 61 Gang, 14 Hao. It's a nice, pretty and cozy place, good breakfast. Next is Taipei 101 (MRT City Hall then free shuttle bus), high class shopping mall with entrance to the highest tower in the world (as of today). As it is raining, I decided to go up another day. Miramar is famous for the ferris wheel (MRT Jiannan then free shuttle bus). Well, let the pictures explain...

8.Shopping 1 - Zhong Xiao Dun Hua
This area is packed with shops - higher end - with many more in the alleys. Find the MRT station there, and walk through the underground passage to Zhong Xiao Fu xing, more shops along the way.

9.Shopping 2 - Wu Fen Pu
Cheap Shopping area - MRT (Hou Shan Pi) then walk to shopping district.

10. Taipei Zoo
Brown line MRT all the way to the east - You can take a glimpse of pandas behind the glass cage, sleeping koalas inside bar cage, tigers and monkeys behind bar cages too, I'll have to say I've seen better zoo.

11. Story Land & Ghost House (Gui Wu)
Only if you have nothing much to do, or if you are around the neighbourhood. Take MRT to Taipei Main Station, there are tons of shops in the basement of the station. Then walk out towards Zhong San West Road for a mile to find Story Land. This is a collection of old stuff, and walk down to basement for the ghost house, if you are up for the challenge.

12. Bi Tan
Bi Tan is famous for the suspension bridge - Taiwan Golden Gate, spans over XinDian River. Take MRT - Xindian stop, and the bridge is within walking distance.

13. Jiu Fen & Keelung Night market
JiuFen used to be a gold mine city and now is famous for the old street (lau jie), packed with tourists and souvenir shops and local delicacies - taro balls (yuyuan) & tofu hwa. Take the MRT to Taipei City Hall, take the train to Rui Fang stop, take the bus toward JiuFen. There are other stops that we can't make it that day - She Fen Pu Pu (Ten Points Waterfall), Jin Gua Shan (Golden Mountain) , all reachable by local bus.

Keelung Night Market

Gigantic Squid Tentacles

14. Tissot Glass Art Museum
If you have an afternoon to spare and if you love glass art/art in the process of making, visit the Tissot Glass Art museum. Take MRT stop at Guandu, walk left for 4 minutes. This is my first glass piece, this place is hot.. so dress appropriately if you plan to take the class.

The class itself is interesting, but glass blowing is not as easy as I thought.

15. Shopping 3 - Mitsukoshi & Waffle house
Great area to meet people, Zhong shan MRT stand, exit 1 to go to Mitsukoshi, exit 2 to go to Ijysheng bakery, famous for different flavored mochi, tasty bread and cakes. A famous waffle house is also in the area, Melange cafe, packed with people - Exit 2, walk inside the alley, first right.

When we arrive at 12.30, and took a number, we got 213. Estimated waiting time 1.5-2 hour, and when we finished our waffles, the number is 303. This small cafe is serving 100 guests within less than 2 hours. Amazing !!

The famous Strawberry Waffle

Tuna Waffle with pickle and Mayo

Places yet to go: HuaLian (Taroko Gorge, Tse Zi Temple, Beach), Kenting Beach, Kaoshiung, Taichung. Maybe next time in the next episode of my life. :)

Shanghai

Some places to visit:
- Wai tan - Shanghai Bund
- Tong Fang Min Zhu - Pearl tower
- Ren Min Guang Zhang - People's park
- Jin An District
- Chen Hwang Miao - Yu Yuan Garden

Stayed in Swissotel Grand - great hotel in Jin An District. It can be pricier but the room, the services, and location is super. Day 1 - Took the subway to Chen Hwang Miao, ate the Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao, and walked to the bund. Day 2 - Took a walk around Jin An District, went for a great massage at the Green Place, 2nd floor of Shanghai Center, and dinner at Bali Bistro, an Indo restaurant set up by 10 youngsters.

My Shanghai trip is somewhat short but insightful, fills me up with spirit, and makes me look forward to what's coming next.
